Rare Bacterial Infection in Toronto: Health Department Confirms 'Legionnaires' Disease'

 

 

The City's health department has intensified its investigation following the confirmation of Legionnaires' disease in Toronto. Respiratory infections caused by the bacteria have been reported in approximately six individuals who live or work within a 1.5-kilometer radius of the Bathurst and Dupont Street area. Officials stated that sample testing is underway at water cooling towers and water supply systems in the vicinity to identify the source of the infection.

The health department has clarified that there is currently no cause for public alarm, as the disease does not spread directly from person to person. Transmission occurs when individuals inhale water droplets containing the *Legionella* bacteria, which thrive in artificial water systems such as air conditioners, cooling towers, and hot tubs. Key symptoms of the illness include fever, cough, shortness of breath, and muscle pain.

The infection can lead to severe respiratory complications; therefore, older adults, smokers, individuals with weakened immune systems, and those with chronic illnesses are advised to exercise extra caution. The local administration has advised those exhibiting symptoms to seek immediate medical attention and has initiated measures to disinfect water systems in buildings at risk, as a precautionary step.
