Violence Against Healthcare Workers Rising in Alberta: Workers' Compensation Board Data Released

 

 

A new report indicates an increase in incidents of violence against healthcare workers in Alberta compared to previous years. Data from the Alberta Workers' Compensation Board reveals that complaints regarding attacks on healthcare workers have reached their highest level in a decade, with over a thousand incidents officially reported in 2025 alone.

Union representatives identify staff shortages in hospitals and emergency departments, long patient wait times, and mental stress as the primary factors driving this rise in violence. Healthcare unions allege that the verbal abuse and threats faced by staff far exceed official figures, noting that the majority of such incidents go unreported.

In response to this situation, authorities have implemented strict measures—including the installation of weapon detectors—at major hospitals in Edmonton to enhance security. However, healthcare experts and trade unions are urging the government to go beyond temporary security measures by increasing staffing levels and formulating concrete policies to ensure workplace safety.
