Tennessee: Inmate Christa Pike (50) is in critical condition in the hospital following a failed attempt to carry out her execution in Tennessee. Lawyers stated that she was transferred to the hospital after death did not occur despite the administration of two consecutive doses of the lethal drug.
Attorneys revealed that officials struggled to administer the necessary dosage, requiring at least seven needle insertions into her arms. Throughout the execution process, she remained alive and was heard snoring.
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee described the incident as "shocking and disturbing" and ordered a review of execution procedures, as well as an indefinite postponement of Pike's execution.
Christa Pike, who was sentenced to death for murder in 1995 at the age of 18, was set to become the first woman in Tennessee to face execution in the last 200 years.
