A new provincial museum honoring the historical and cultural contributions of the South Asian community in British Columbia is set to be established in Surrey. Although other major cities, including Vancouver, were considered for the project, the provincial government and the BC NDP ultimately decided in favor of Surrey. The city was chosen because it is home to one of Canada's largest South Asian populations, making it the most suitable location for the project's realization.

An official Memorandum of Understanding regarding the project's implementation has been signed between the British Columbia government and the City of Surrey. This initiative aims to showcase to the public the heritage of generations who immigrated to Canada from South Asian nations—such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal—as well as the challenges they faced and the roles they played in the country's development. The decision to build the museum in Surrey was reached following extensive consultations and the gathering of public opinion.

The project is expected to provide a significant boost to Surrey's tourism and economic sectors. Elected representatives and local authorities remarked that this serves as recognition of a long-standing demand of the South Asian community. Officials announced that the next phase of proceedings—comprising the identification of a specific site for the museum, the preparation of architectural designs, and the allocation of construction funds—would commence shortly.
