A former mortgage broker in Ontario has been fined $40,000 for sharing client information with unlicensed individuals and facilitating fraudulent activities. This action was taken against the former broker, Paranjeet Kaur—who is of Indian origin—as part of a settlement agreement reached with the Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA) of Ontario. Although regulators initially sought a fine of up to $85,000, the amount was reduced to $40,000 following subsequent negotiations.

The investigation found that Kaur used unlicensed referral agents to source borrowers and attempted to deceive lending institutions by providing false information. She was found guilty of violating mortgage brokerage regulations and knowingly facilitating unlawful activities. The investigation further revealed that while operating under the license of a firm called Trillium Mortgage Services, she collected substantial commissions without adhering to proper security protocols or verifying client information. In connection with this series of frauds, the regulatory authority has announced specific fines and legal actions against both the firm and the principal broker responsible for the brokerage operations. Financial regulators have tightened their oversight to curb the rising incidence of such illegal activities and fraudulent transactions within the real estate and mortgage sectors.
