Vancouver Coastal Health has announced, via an official press release, that a bat—which bit several individuals in the city of Vancouver—has tested positive for rabies.
Health authorities examined the bat responsible for the bites. Following expert medical evaluation, those who were bitten have been administered the rabies vaccine, as well as immunoglobulin as a preventive measure.
Rabies is a serious disease that affects the brain and the nervous system. The virus is transmitted exclusively through the saliva of an infected animal. Authorities have clarified that the disease cannot be spread through a bat's feces, urine, or other bodily secretions.
Officials have urged anyone who may have been bitten or scratched by a bat—particularly one that appeared sick or exhibited unusual behavior—in Vancouver’s West End area between September 22 and October 17 to seek medical attention immediately. Individuals located outside the Vancouver Coastal Health region are advised to contact their local health authority.
