The Shamonda virus, previously known to affect only animals, has been confirmed in a human for the first time worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the infected individual, from France, has died. The WHO noted that the patient lived in an area where animals carrying the virus were present and had a compromised immune system.

The deceased was a young man who had been undergoing treatment at a hospital in Lyon. The virus had been circulating among animals in eastern France. French authorities suspect that the infection was transmitted through the bite of an infected fly. The WHO has stated that this appears to be an isolated case and that there is little risk of further spread.
