A wheel detached from a PAL Airlines aircraft during its landing in Wabush, Labrador. Lee Pitts, a passenger who is also a CBC producer, captured footage of the wheel coming off the aircraft's landing gear just as it touched down on the runway.
The incident occurred on Friday as Flight 901 was landing in Wabush. Lee Pitts stated that he had noticed smoke coming from the area of the wheel during takeoff from Goose Bay; upon seeing the wheel wobbling shortly after the plane took off, he began recording the video.
Despite losing the wheel, the aircraft landed safely, and all passengers were able to disembark without injury.
Joseph Galimberti, a spokesperson for PAL Airlines, explained that the incident was caused by a failure in the wheel bearing. He added that an investigation into the event is currently underway in coordination with Transport Canada. The airline also promptly arranged another aircraft to continue the journey.
