To mitigate fraud and security risks associated with transactions conducted via online platforms, the Toronto Police Service has officially decided to establish 'Online Marketplace Exchange Zones' at all police stations across the city. These zones are designed as official spaces where individuals buying or selling items through digital platforms—such as Facebook Marketplace or Kijiji—can safely meet strangers to complete their transactions.
Located on the premises of police stations throughout the city, these zones are equipped with 24-hour surveillance cameras and adequate lighting. The primary objective of this initiative is to prevent robberies, physical assaults, and fraudulent activities that people might otherwise encounter during the exchange of goods bought or sold online. Instead of inviting strangers to their homes or meeting in isolated locations, the public can use these secure, public spaces to safely complete their transactions.
These exchange zones, situated within police station premises, are available for public use completely free of charge. The Toronto Police have urged city residents to make the most of this system to ensure that digital commercial transactions become safer and more transparent. In the guidelines issued to the public, the police advise choosing daylight hours for the exchange of goods and exercising extreme caution during financial transactions.
