A sailor from Gujarat, identified as Nahim Aziz, was killed in an attack on the Indian-flagged cargo vessel 'MSV Al-Yusuf' near the coast of Oman. Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, has officially confirmed the incident, which took place on Sunday. There were 14 Indian sailors on board the vessel at the time of the attack; the individual who died had sustained critical injuries.
Tensions and military actions between the U.S. and Iran in the Persian Gulf region pose a significant security threat to international maritime traffic. Since February of last year, 22 Indians have been killed in various attacks in the region, 14 of whom were crew members on ships. Following a series of frequent attacks in the Strait of Hormuz, a ban had previously been imposed on the employment of Indian crew members on vessels transiting through this route.
